Small world

Small world. Saturday, I get a call from a friend, “Hey you know Racquel?” Yeah, I do, but only on Twitter. She helped me with various questions regarding moving to Manila from Jakarta. She was a fantastic resource and very helpful. “Well, she’s here hanging out if you wanna drop by.” … huh … ? Turns out Racquel’s fiance was in my friend’s wedding – as his best man. They were over at his place hanging out and apparently theRead more

Banaue boy

I’ve just returned from a week in Banaue in the heart of Luzon. I’ll post more stories and photos soon. — As I hiked up the trail to a waterfall high above the village of Banaue, this young boy jumped up onto a concrete post and just watched me for a moment. I guess we were both equally curious about the others’ activities. After I took the photo, he jumped down and went on his way. The sun’s glare actuallyRead more

Digital downloads vs physical media: How will developing countries keep up?

There was an article on Engadget.com today making note of EA – Electronic Arts CEO saying: “When people think of games, they traditionally think, in the U.S., of what sells on the Xbox, the PlayStation, and the Wii, and they forget about all these online services that are out there… if you add all that stuff up, it’s almost half the industry now. It’s about 40 to 45 percent. Next year it’s likely to be the larger share of theRead more

Batangas: a quick escape from Manila

We just enjoyed a four day weekend; three of which were spent on the beach of south Luzon. (Luzon is the island Manila is part of). It was nice to finally take a trip without a jet and carbon guilt (well, still a little). As an American, road trips are part of my soul. The roads are surprisingly nice once you get on the Skyway, and a cruising speed of 130km/h was the result of too much caffeine and confinementRead more

Twitter downturn? Nah, it’s just me, methinks. aka Twitter’s future in 2010.

A funny yet predictable observation: I’ve been too busy these past few months to utilize Twitter in the same way as I did last year, and noticed a few things: 90% of the people I used to converse with on a daily basis 12 months ago no longer communicate with me, nor I with them (nothing negative, just factual). I spend perhaps 70% less time on Twitter currently than I did last year – hmm, correlation perhaps? The statement “YouRead more

Flying through Typhoon Mirinae (aka Santi)

We’re scheduled to fly from Boracay to Manila tomorrow – exactly when Typhoon Mirinae (known locally as Santi) is scheduled to hit Manila directly. Being new to the whole typhoon thing, we’re unsure as to how dangerous it actually is to fly through one, but it’s not an experience I feel I need to check off my list of things to do. Philippine Airlines has cancelled over 50 domestic and international flights into and out of Manila beginning tonight. OurRead more
